Do-It-Yourself Bioinformatics Systems – a Security Perspective

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) bioinformatics systems can have
the allure of being managed in-house, built specifically
for your use case, and leveraging existing tools and API
calls provided by the public internet services. However,
organizations may not realize the scope of ongoing
maintenance and the higher risk tolerance required with
DIY systems. In addition, DIY systems incur significant
costs in both time and money as companies learn about
and build these systems.

It is easy to assume all cloud-based tools are secure and
compliant off the shelf from the cloud vendor. But this
assumption is wrong. If your resources and risk tolerance
are both very high, then a DIY system might be appropriate.
If your system and data have value and are worth securing, consider a bespoke omics bioinformatics platform with security and compliance built in.

Download this white paper for some points to consider that apply to both cloud-based and local systems.
